Ezra Charles is Houston’s most acclaimed piano player, winning the Houston Press Award seven times for Best Keyboardist while fronting his band. “The Story of Boogie-Woogie” is his new theatrical show that traces the history of one of America’s favorite musical forms from its Texas origins to world-wide fame, while he illustrates with renditions of many classic examples from the Masters. The show combines Ezra’s virtuoso piano skills with his amusing, fascinating narrative about the fusion of African traditions with American roots music that produced the music that would eventually spawn Jazz, Swing, and Rock’n’Roll. He is accompanied on stage by his son Jake Helpinstill, a 2015 graduate in Jazz Drums from Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA). Together they produce an exciting two-hour show (with intermission) that has delighted sold-out audiences all over Texas.
